Originating from India, Masala Chai or 'Spiced Tea' is one of the most popular black tea blends in the world. This ancient traditional recipe is prepared by blending a strong & robust black tea with an array of fresh & aromatic spices. Our signature 'Masala Chai Spiced Tea' is symbolic of the original house blend which has been cherished in India for decades. A combination of Assam CTC (Cut, Torn, Crushed) & Orthodox leaves are blended in a varying ratio and forms the base. The base tea is then blended with fresh spices including crushed cardamom, cinnamon, black pepper, long peppers, ginger and cloves.
Widely different from the Chai tea blends produced in western countries, the original Indian masala chai tea blend stands out, due to the superior and distinctive properties of spices grown in India. Traditionally prepared only with milk, Masala Chai can also be enjoyed without milk.
One legend, certainly apocryphal, avows that the chef for a royal king of India created this tea by scenting it with the luxurious fragrance of spices of his kitchen: cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and ginger. The king, entranced by the unique taste of his chef's special tea, announced that this drink could be served only in his court and forbade the chef to divulge its ingredients. Long after the king's death, however, the recipe filtered down from royalty to the aristocracy and then to the masses, with each group adding and deleting spices to its taste. No matter where it began, though, it's clear that the spiced tea of India can intrigue anyone, in any era or station of life.
