Filicori and Zecchini Italian Coffee Roaster: Who We Are

Since 1919, Filicori Zecchini has been synonymous with high quality coffee, Bolognese history, experience and family. Right at the end of the World War I, Aldo Filicori and Luigi Zecchini decided to start up a commercial activity in Bologna which embraced, under their watchful and expert supervision, the entire coffee production chain, from the importation of the coffee beans up to the preparation of the espresso. Around that coffee cup, a real world of values was soon constructed that, still today, brings together that passion for the traditional and the technological innovation to create unmistakable products.

From the times when the aroma of just roasted coffee drifted around the streets of Bologna city centre, between Via degli Orefici, where the Bottega del Caffè coffee shop was situated, and Via Oberdan, where the first headquarters of traditional coffee roasting was situated, a century has now passed.  Years brimming with satisfaction and achievements that have led the company to distribute that unique flavor to 43 countries, created in a small Italian coffee shop, where the coffee was nurtured and loved and where there were no compromises in the search for quality.

The dream of Aldo and Luigi was cherished by Giovanni Filicori, a pillar of strength for the company since 1964, when he took the reins. This strong commitment to the business continues to be renewed and revived, thanks to the ideas and shared vision of Costanza Filicori, Luca Filicori and Luigi Zecchini Jr, faithful descendants of the founders who have made the decision to promote traditional top quality coffee and spread the culture. Strengthened by the business’ success, the experience and the recognition received over the years, today we are looking to the future aiming at an increasingly wide range of services and products, and suitable for satisfying the needs of those who, in a cup of coffee, look for the highest quality, so dear to our Italian coffe company.

Promoting and enhancing the coffee culture via our “know how”, in the end, is the stimulus which led to the creation, in 2001, of the Espresso Laboratory, a professional training experience made-to-measure for distributors and clients. In the classroom the secrets of how to prepare the perfect espresso are revealed, the processing of the milk or the maintenance of the instruments, but above all the knowledge and creativity that have allowed the spirit of the Italian coffee roaster Filicori Zecchini to survive over time.

In fact, the story and the dream certainly don’t end here. Even as you read this, new ideas are taking shape and new projects are coming to life, founded on the constant conviction that passion for tradition and technological tradition complement each other perfectly.


The History of our Italian Coffee Company


Aldo Filicori and Luigi Zecchini inaugurate the first Coffee shop, in Via degli Orefici in the centre of Bologna, a short way from the coffee roasting headquarters in via Oberdan.


Filicori Zecchini becomes “official supplier” of the Real Casa: the Savoia too were conquered by the unmistakable flavor of our coffee.


With the economic strategy of self-sufficiency, imposed by the fascist regime in 1936 and, later, with the participation of Italy in the Second World War, in place of coffee which had become almost impossible to find, certain surrogates were used such as: barley, acorns, figs and chicory. Even in the plants of Filicori Zecchini, in these dark times, in place of coffee, barley is roasted instead.


After the end of that period of great economic difficulty due to the Second World War, coffee becomes a symbol of reconstruction and the economic miracle. Drinking coffee becomes synonymous with still being able to afford to do something. Filicori Zecchini also benefits from this and starts distributing their products in areas besides their own shops, such as Bars, Restaurants and Patisseries.


Giovanni Filicori, son of Aldo, takes the reins of the family business, transforming a small economic concern into a real industry: he is the one to make those important investments which introduce new technologies and instigate valuable commercial relations with the most important coffee producers in Brazil, Columbia, India and Costa Rica.


It is the year of the first exports of products abroad which mark a further evolution of Filicori Zecchini.


The inauguration of the new headquarters in Osteria Grande, a few kilometers from Bologna.


The third generation, Costanza Filicori and Luigi Zecchini Jr, enter the company.


A year which marks a new record for Filicori Zecchini: in 12 months, more than 250,000 kg of green coffee beans are roasted.


The Espresso Laboratory is opened, the training project so keenly desired by Filicori Zecchini for distributors and clients.


The first Filicori Zecchini franchise opens, from an idea by Luca Filicori, an idea that takes Bolognese coffee all over the world.


A million kilograms of coffee: this is the prestigious achievement the company reaches 95 years after it was founded.


A year of turnaround and expansion for the company: new partnerships are born and new sales channels are formed. The range of products offered to clients also expands for an increasingly quality-oriented experience: tea and espresso machines for domestic use, along with fine, Italian chocolates.
