A spirit is an alcoholic beverage created through distillation of a mixture produced from alcoholic fermentation. This process purifies the spirit and removed diluting components, such as water and is intended to increase the proportion of alcohol. This does not include beverages such as beer, wine or cider, as they are fermented but not distilled. Brandy, however, is a spirit produced by the distillation of wine. Other examples of distilled beverages include vodka, gin, run and whisky.
Liqueurs are alcoholic beverages that are bottled with added sugar and have added flavors that are usually derived from fruits, herbs, or nuts. Liqueurs are distinct from eaux-de-vie, fruit brandies, and flavored liquors, which contain no added sugars.
